Kotor (Italian: Cattaro) is a coastal town in Montenegro. It is located in a secluded part of the Gulf of Kotor. The city has a population of 13,510 The old Mediterranean port of Kotor is surrounded by fortifications built during the Venetian period. It is located on the Bay of Kotor (Boka Kotorska), one of the most indented parts of the Adriatic Sea. Together with the nearly overhanging limestone cliffs of Orjen and Lovæen, Kotor and its surrounding area form an impressive landscape. Kotor hosts several summer events, such as the Summer Carnival or Bokeljska Noæ. Well, Lonely Planet did not list Kotor as the #1 place to visit in 2016 for nothing! Their opening line ‘drop dead gorgeous’ certainly sums it up. Overlooking the Old Town and 1,350 steps up the mountain is St John’s Fortress. The view is worth the hike up.

Despite having only one main street, this tiny town boasts 16 churches and 17 formerly grand palazzi.The town slopes down from the highway to a narrow waterfront road (Obala Marka Martinoviæa) that runs along its length. At its heart is St Nicholas' Church, set on a small square lined with date palms and the bronze busts of famous citizens. Perast's most famous landmarks aren't on land at all: two peculiarly picturesque islands with equally peculiar histories.

Sveti Stefan, a fortified fishing town on a small island, connected to the mainland by a narrow passage that is leaning on pink pebbles at the shore. The island has been turned into a luxury five-star hotel. At the beginning, there were 12 families, and in the mid-fifties of the last century only 20 people living on the isle.

During King Nikola’s reign many embassies were built that give it today’s specific looks. Two of the most representative buildings are the Monasteries of Cetinje and Biljarda.

Lovcen is the perfect day trip into the mountains from Kotor Bay. It lies between Kotor, Cetinje and Budva and is an easy day trip from anywhere on the coast. The route via the 25 serpentine road up from Kotor is one of the most scenic in the country and will give you stunning views of the Bay of Kotor all the way.

The lake is located in Zeta – Skadar valley and is surrounded by mountains, and it’s 7 km away from Adriatic Sea. Two Thirds of Skadar Lake is in Montenegro and the rest is in Albania. Black Lake is the best known, and in same time largest of 18 glacial lakes in The Durmitor National Park. More than 3 km long walking path around the lake, is a most popular for hiking and recreation.

 

 

 

St Giovani and Fortress – 1km


San Giovanni, also called St. John’s Castle, is perched 1200m high on the hill of St. John. The fortifications date back as far as 532 when Byzantine Emperor Justinian I had the fort built. Since it’s creation, the fort has under seen plenty of changes and battles under Venetian, Russian, and French rule. It’s been bombed by British Naval armies, occupied during World War II, and even survived three separate earthquakes.

The walking path to San Giovanni castle has 1,350 steps. The view over the Kotor bay is breathtaking from the top.

San Giovanni is part of the fortifications of Kotor which are an integrated historical fortification system that protected the medieval town of Kotor containing ramparts, towers, citadels, gates, bastions, forts, cisterns, a castle, and ancillary buildings and structures. They incorporate military architecture of Illyria, Byzantium, Venice, and Austria. Together with the old town and its natural surroundings the fortifications were inscribed in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1979 labelled Natural and Culturo-Historical Region of Kotor.
